How do I prune my pear tree?

This is our second year in the house and the first year it produced alot of fruit (none of which I could eat, cause the bugs had their share). This year, I sprayed them in the early spring and I barely had any fruit. I have heard that when the branches are straight up in the air, that makes them NOT produce fruit. Any truth to this??

Wait until the leaves fall off the tree, then prune any branches that go straight up or straight down. Then prune any confusing branching patterns such as branches that cross each other. Good luck.
