How long does it take pear and apple trees to grow from a seed to a fruit bearing tree?

I would hazard a guess and say it would take a minimum of 3 years before a seed grown tree would produce apples.

Apple trees are not generally grown from seed these days. They are grafted. Which means that a branch from a parent tree is grafted onto the root-stock of a different tree (usually some kind of Salix). This grafted branch then grows into a tree.

Using different kinds of root stocks means that trees can be grown to different, selected sizes too. The Romans were the first to discover the advantages of grafting fruit trees.

The grafting method ensures that the apples produced by the new tree are the same variety as the apples produced by the parent tree. Seed grown trees are not as reliable in this respect, as the tree could grow to be of any variety that pollinated the blossoms of the tree that eventually produced the apple the seed came from.
