I want to protect the inside of the tree that is exposed now.
I have bradford pear tree that 1/3 of it broke off. Is there anything I can do to protect the rest of it?
Sorry.. Brad pears are notoriously weak trees. their growth habit makes them prone to splitting and wind damage.
I'd suggest taking down your Brad and replacing it with a Cleveland pear. they have a very similar look and are far superior trees. Nice, early spring blossoms, just like the Brad.
Chances are better than not that the tree split down the trunk beyond what you can see.. This tree is liable to get bug and disease infestations.
Reply:There is nothing you can do to protect your pear tree other than prune off the damage (with proper pruning cuts) and the let the tree compartmentilize the damage. Trees have a very effective defense mechanism and can survive very well when this sort of thing happens. You do not need to paint the wound with any kind of wound dressing, this will actually slow down the trees ability to grow over the wound.
