They were not sealed properly when canned and have fermented. You did right by not eating.......she may have overfilled the jars, had a ship in the glass or rubber seal, not processed long enough or cooled too quickly. Any of these can prevent a jar from sealing tight to maintain safety.

Sounds like something was 'eating' the sugars (I'm guessing)
Reply:Probably improperly canned and were fermenting and getting ready to "blow up". If you have any more of the cans, look to see if the lids may be swelling, but protect your FACE, in case the thing blows up and sends shrapnel of glass in your eyes. Not fun to be cut up, either, make sure you are protected. Good luck.
