the apple and pear tree are self pollenators. but we found out after we got home the cherry is not. do we need another cherry tree?
first time fruit tree growers!!
We have three dwarf fruit trees, apple, pear, and the bing cherry says it needs a pollenator, will the others do?
I have a montmorency cherry tree in my yard. None of my neighbors have any fruit trees in the whole neighborhood. My cherry tree is FULL every year. It did take a few years to get to that volume, but the birds and myself love its produce every year. The apple tree I have does not produce because it needs a mate, several species will do the trick. (its mate died, it needs a new one) So to answer your question, some types do and some do not need a pollenator. All trees do better with a mate, but Im very happy with one cherry tree. They make a mess, but are worth the fruit. Your best bet is to contact the place you bought it from and ask them, they usually know what they are talking about. Stark Brothers is a good place to ask also, they have catalogs and are online. They know their tree's and are very friendly!!
Reply:Yes you need another cherry tree to polinate. Your other trees will bear better if you get another variety to cross pollinate, even though they are self pollinating. About any good gardening book will tell you what type of trees are needed to polinate another.
Reply:you have to have a pollinator of the SAME specie!! a pear tree can not pollinate a cherry tree!!!
Reply:Unless your neighbors have a cheer tree you will need another tree.
