What to do w/ a 3 year old, 10 ft pear tree that is not growing straight up?

Is there anything that can be done to correct or will it just grow crooked? Should I continue using a board or rope to straighten

the base?

Take a rope and tie it the top of the trunk, put a piece of cut garden hose and put it on the part of the rope that touches the tree. Take a stake and hammer it deep into the ground at a 45 degree angle. Pull the rope tight until the tree moves to the direction you want the tree to grow and then tie the rope around the stake. You will probably have to re-do this every 3 months as the rope will stretch over time.
Reply:You have left it too late. When you originally planted the tree you could have put it in a tube, which is what foresters do. Now you had beetter get used to it being crooked.

It's strange isn't it that two apples make a pair, but two pears don't make an apple.
Reply:L.A. is real close. We use a piece of wire, because it doesn't stretch. Run it through a piece of 3/8" hose (ie hose from auto parts store) to protect the tree. Run the wire through a turnbuckle (get at hardware store) so you can tighten it periodically. Stake well.

Don't forget to investigate why it is growing crooked. Is there a larger tree shading it on one side? If you need to, prune the larger tree.
