Fall / late winter, the dormant period. The tree's asleep, it won't know it's been moved.
What is the best time of year to move a pear tree?
January-February are the best times to transplant pear or any fruit tree.
Why you mignt ask? Because fruit trees are dormant right now. That means there are no leaves on the trees and it does not grow during the cold months winter months.
However the root system is still active....sooo I would transplant now water about 2 times per week and a good root stimulator after planting.
BY the way root stimulator is NOT a fertilizer it is a vitamin for the root system.
Reply:Not December because the partridge will get disorientated. ;-)
Reply:Its perfect weather NOW!!! Pick a day when sunny and dry prepare your hole and hey presto your new view,
P.s. remember to put a grease band around bottom to stop the creatures from investigating the tree now in there territory,
cheers mick
Reply:I think the best time to move trees is in the autumn. Any time the sap isn't rising, is probably o.k. though.
Reply:2.30pm on the 2nd Wednesday in June.
Reply:up til now - not after 7 Feb.
Take out rootball as whole as possible.
Have new hole dug, watered, left overnight and watered again.
Add a handful of seashells to hole or mix sharp or silver sand with spoil you fill in hole with.
Water the tree into the new hole with tepid water.
Feed the tree as per the directions on the packet.
Thin the tree a little, removing any parallel branches, to reduce root requirement temporarily, in March.
Be prepared for a reduced crop and/or more leaf this year.
Prune again after Novemebr 11 2008 quite hard and feed again the following spring with a very light prune.
Reduce activity the smaller the tree and the less you damage the root ball. Add original hole soil to the new hole, the sides of which should be loose so roots settle in easier.
At Yule wassail your tree and talk to it nicely regularly. Pears are sacred to venus so it is a goddess! Flirt with it if you are male and be respectful if not. No I am not joking, it works. Small trees might be sheltered with a bush. Red/ Blackcurrant is quite good as the fruit goes with the pears when poaching for dessert.
Fill in the old hole in layers to prevent sinking, tamping down as you go. Use last soil removed in bottom, then mid, then topsoil back on top. Use any sod from new hole to cover old hole if appropriate. Leave a circle radius 18" from trunk all round tree. Ensure tree is buried to same point as before by tying thread round trunk before you dig it up. Allow infill to run away a little from the trunk. You feed and water trees in their drip area, not by their trunk, though pears are often well upswept. Keep the bare soil weeded or add bedding for this year like lobelia and alyssum that spreads to cover and prevent weeds. Light for such may be no problem with a pear.
