What is wrong with my pear tree?

It has a lot of pears on it that continue to grow, but most of the leaves have turned brown. What do I need to do?

If the tree looks like it was on fire it's fire blight. I would cut out the bad spots and hall it away from the tree. You can spray with streptomycin but it's expensive.
Reply:Hi:

I am a landscaper and designer. It sounds like your Pear tree has a fungus or insect infestation problem. I agree with some of the other answers. There are a couple of things you can do. First check the back side of the leaves. Is there any color spots? I will link you to the simple solutions section of my website. There is a page on identifying pests and diseases on trees and shrubs. This page may help you.

Another thing you can try, is to take your fingernail or a small knife and scratch the surface of a branch. If it is green, the tree is healthy. If it is brown, the tree may be in shock. Look over your watering schedule and see if you need to adjust your watering times. You could also loosen the dirt around the base, add some organic mushroom compost to the soil. Take a hose and slow drip around the entire base of the tree. Water ten to fifteen minutes and move your hose around, so you make sure you are getting a good soaking to your entire root system of your Pear tree. Do this for a week.

I hope this will help some. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. There are many articles, tips and techniques that may be useful to you. Good luck and have a great day!

Reply:You need to water the tree, or your tree has blight or insects.

If you have been watering the tree and the leaves are turning brown, it needs to be sprayed to kill the blight and insects.
Reply:Or Pear Slugs do this as well by getting on the underside of the leaf and it curls to yellow then falls off.
