Help with pear jam?

can i use knox gelatin instead of sure.jell pectin?

you can mush the pears up add the sugar and spices and cook it down to the thickness that you like and put it in the jars we made it all the time when i was a kid and called it pear butter like apple butter but made out of pears instead
Reply:nope, not the same. thing at all. gelatin is as it is called. Sure jell is pectin which is a concentrated form of the tartness in fruit that occurs naturally. That is what thickens your jam. In the old days(?) folks added tart apples to jams to thicken it. sure jel does the same thing. lots of jam and Jelly recipes in the sure jel package too.
