Pear tree trouble?

I have a pear tree growing in the backyard, and it doesn't seem healthy. It produces fruit, but the pears look awful, and seem to rot on the branch rather than ripen properly. The leaves are also turning brown and full of holes.

Anyone know what might be wrong with it, or how to fix it?

Thanks!
Pear tree trouble?
You didn't say where you live, so I'm going to answer based on the pictures and the average across America. You've definitely got some chewing insect problems going on, ( the holes in the leaves), and disease has set in (the brown leaves and brown, disfigured fruit). You really need to talk to your local county extension agent who can help you much better in this situation, and who will be more familiar with your climate, disease, and insect problems that are gonna be unique to your area. Or, if you want to talk to a local nursery expert about this, it would also be beneficial. Take the two photos with you, as well as clippings of the leaves, and fruit, just like you have in the picture. That will help them diagnose the problem much easier and quicker.

One last thing, look at the bark and trunk of the tree, check for any damage like where a lawn mower or string trimmer may have run into it accidentally. This can cause a multitude of problems just like the ones you have. See if the trunk has any "sap" or "weeping" areas. This could be a sign of damage and consequent insect infestation.

Good luck.
Reply:Sorry to say this but it sounds like root rot. The roots get damaged from either soil erosion, fungus growth, or just plain age. The roots are unable to pull up sufficient nutrients from the soil and thus the tree slowly dies. If it were me, I would treat the lawn for fungus, and lay a fresh layer of potting soild mixed in with mulch and regular dirt. Trim away some of the branches, espescially the ones that are fruit bearing so the tree can heal. Good luck.
