Why is a pear called a pear?

It derives from Middle English `pere `(before the year 1000), via Old English `peru` from the Latin `pira`. The botanical name of the tree is `Pyrus`.
Why is a pear called a pear?
If you called an apple a pear it would just look silly! And then you'd have to change everything elses name! No, a pear's a pear. It's just what it is!
Reply:why is anything called anything?
Reply:Because there was to identical fruit on the tree and someone said... There's a nice pair" but the other person thought they said "There's a nice pear" ... and he said "yes, so is the other one !"
Reply:That's a stupid question.
Reply:I saw some avocado pears today at my local fruit shop... Not sure if it was some kind of freak of nature though. Looks like pears are about to take over the world as we know it.
Reply:We got the word from the Romans -- "pera" - via the Norman French "poire".
Reply:that's how it is, none explanation
Reply:cuz it is a pear
Reply:a pear by any other name would still be called a pear
Reply:because it's not a walnut
