How to trim a pear tree?

If you want a central leader, than trim off any side branches that are competing. Do this in the winter, Jan or Feb when the tree is dormant. Also pear tree branches tend to grow straight up and you want them to bend and hold fruit. I place weights on a string and suspend them from the branches so that the branches open up and away from the central leader rather than grow straight up. Pear branches like to remain tight so the weight slowly bend the branch away from the center of the tree enabling to better bear the weight of fruit. I have about a 1/4 pound metal ball on a string slowly bringing the branches out and away. However, I have a very small pear tree. Remove all dead branches and trim away any water spouts which are little shoots coming up from the middle of primary branches.
