What is an apple pear?
Apple pear is sweet in taste - very yummy and not poisonous. Often used in many desserts.
Reply:My god, an unholy alliance of genesplicing and cockney rhyming slang. Truly we live an age of darkness...
Reply:There, there Bri. Does your store normally sell foods that are poisonous?
Reply:Apple pears are interesting exotic fruits because they are a type of pear that looks very similar to an apple. Although their origins are from Asia, specifically China, Japan, and Korea, apple pears are now grown in other regions including South America and in the United States, in California, Oregon and Washington. Apple pears are sweet and juicy fruits and, depending on where they are grown, are also known by the following names: Asian pear, Japanese pear, Oriental pear, sand pear, pear apple, water pear, and nashi.

You can recognize an apple pear by its round, apple-like shape and by its firm texture. Additionally, depending on the variety type purchased, apple pears have a skin color that can be either golden brown, golden green, or brown and orange. For example, the Honsui variety type has a more brown colored outer skin while the Seigyoku variety type has a yellow toned skin. When purchasing apple pears, if the variety type is not displayed, you may want to ask your grocer what the apple pear type is and to recommend its use. This will allow you to best determine how to use the apple pear type that is available to you.

Apple pears can be purchased year round in some larger supermarket chains, in specialty fruit and vegetable stores, and in Asian markets. When purchasing apple pears, similar to purchasing apples, select only those that are firm to the touch and that have few bruises or marks on them. You should also select only those that have a fragrant aroma. Once you have purchased your apple pears you can store them in your home for up to one week as long as you store them in your refrigerator.

Apple pears have a sweet taste and an extremely crispy texture. Because of this, they are most commonly used raw, for example, when eaten whole with the skin intact. Apple pears are also a good addition to salads and go well when accompanied by other exotic fruits such as mangos and papaya or when combined with certain vegetables, such as cucumbers. When using raw apple pear pieces in recipes, make sure that prior to using the fruit you place each piece in a mixture of lemon juice and water. This will prevent each apple pear piece from discoloring.

Currently, there are many apple pear varieties available on the market. Some of these varieties include the following: 20th century, Chojuro, Kikusui, Shinsui, and Ya Li. Most of the varieties available for purchase in stores are of Japanese origin although you may be able to find a few varieties whose origins are from China.

Apple pears provide a delicious alternative to the more traditional fruits currently available in supermarkets. They also provide an interesting complement to any meal because of their unique appearance and appealing taste. Apple pears are a welcome addition to many desserts and salads and, where available for purchase, should be tried as an alternative to the typical pear that is commonly found in most grocery stores today.
