Best time of the year to be pruning a pear tree?

no harm to tree
Best time of the year to be pruning a pear tree?
The absolute best time of the year to prune a pear tree, from the perspective of the health of the tree, is in the dead of winter on the coldest day of the year. There will be no leaves, so you can see the branching structure clearly. There are no insects active to infest your tree through the pruning wounds. There are no diseases active to infest through the wounds. And your tree will never heal as fast as it will in spring when it first comes out of dormancy. If, by chance, you can not or do not want to prune in the dead of winter, then prune while the tree is dormant but before it breaks buds in spring. January through March, depending upon where you live, would be the ideal months.

Diseased, dead or broken branches can be pruned at anytime of the year.
Reply:Most of the pear orchards cut theirs in January here in Michigan.

Pruning Pear Trees:

Like other plants, pruning established trees is healthy for them. It results in a bigger crop. Prune pear trees annually in the early spring, before the new year's growth begins.

First, remove dead or unhealthy branches and limbs. Top off the main trunk and any suckers at a height that you can reach the fruit with a ladder. Also prune in areas where growth is very bushy. This will increase sunlight and air penetration, to help the overall health and growth of the tree. You can also prune branches to maintain a shapely looking tree.
