What's wrong with my pear tree?

I bought a house that has a pear tree in the back yard. The tree doesn't seem to be very old, but does produce fruit. The prob;em is, the pears are way too hard to eat, or even cut. Is there anything that you could suggest I do for it to make delicious edible pears?

You have a winter pear tree. These pears are great for canning or cooking with. You might want to do an internet search for winter pears and find out a little more about them.

Sorry, you can't make a winter pear turn into a Bartlett. The tree is doing just what it is suppposed to.

Happy Gardening!

Reply:they are most likely over-ripe. we usually pick pears that aren't quite ripe and keep them where they aren't easily disturbed. to check for ripeness gently squish the pear w/ one hand and if it is where it is kinda squishy to mildly firm then eat it.

don't worry u'll know what i mean when u get to that point.
Reply:Never let pears ripen on the tree. They will get core rot. Pick them and let them ripen off the tree. Put them with other ripe fruit and they will ripen faster.
