Can i re-plant a pear tree(its about 8-9ft tall)will the roots be too big?

If you'd like to hedge your bets a bit, you can do some root pruning and move the tree next spring. To root prune, go just

barely inside the dripline of the tree and cut straight down with a sharp drain or tiling spade all around the tree. Next spring, you'll

have to dig it all up and lift ball properly, using straps or a tree spade -- you can't just knock most of the soil off and grab the trunk and pull. Or you can hire a tree spade.

Personally, I wouldn't move a tree of this size unless it had been in the ground less than 18 months and I could hire several knowledgeable laborers to help, or a service with a tree spade.

Yes, you can replant it, but you should wait until it drops all its leaves. Once that happens it's in dormancy, and instead of sending its energy to the leaves, it will send more energy to the roots, allowing them to re-establish during the fall and winter. Make sure you dig your hole large enough, for starters. Look here for complete instructions:

Good luck!
Reply:Root spread does not relate to branch spread!

Better question is how long tis been planted. If only a few years you should be OK, with care and aftercare. If a long time, then it will be harder and less likely to flourish.

Might just be easier to get a new one?
Reply:The roots generally reach out as far as the branches do. That will give you an idea of how big the root ball is. And you should get about half to 3 quarters of the root length and a lot of tlc Planting now is the best. You should do some major pruning too.
Reply:I have replanted several trees in my garden. Some were successful and some were not.A forester told me that when doing this try to take as much soil that the tree originally growing in to the new site .Apple trees I shifted did not produce apples for 2yrs but the main thing is they did not die.A lot depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline. Also water them to let them get a chance to get established.Do not cut the roots if you can help it and put in a supporting post to give additional support.Hope its a success for you.
