Can you top a pear tree so you can reach the fruit? Can you prune a pear tree in September?

Young fruit trees can easily be pruned to keep them to a readily pickable size. I'm talking about genetically full-sized stock, not dwarfed trees.

Google 'fruit bush' to learn about this home fruit tree pruning style. Below are two references from the web. Dave Wilson nursery and San Juan Park District has a demonstration orchard in Northern California.

It takes 2--3 years to take a mature fruit tree down to a fruit bush, but it can be done.
