Whats the best way to prepare them. I was thinking Of frying them in butter. Is it possible? Anyone have a quick and easy recipe that is also tasty. I don't want to be disappointed and don't want to be turned off to trying something new.
I've decided to try some Nopalitos (prickley pear cactus). These are sliced tender cactus in a jar of water.
I make a salsa out of them, but first I rince it really well.
Chop up the cactus,
Chop up a white spanis onion. The size or amount of onion is in proportion to your taste and the amount of cactus.
Cilantro chopped fine, again to taste.
Lime juice to taste.
mix it and enjoy! it is great with just about everything.
It is great on tacos and excellent with a good beer.
Reply:Personally I don't care for the taste. I've had it with carne asada a few times and the taste just doesn't agree with me. Hope you like it.
Try it with chapolinas.
Reply:I like to fry them up with scrambled eggs! Drain them well, first, then rinse then put a bit of butter or oil, not too much and saute them and then add beaten eggs and cook till eggs are scrambled set the way you like.

Reply:I love nopales! You can grow your own in your back yard. They are best when they are freshly cut. You just won't get the right taste if you eat the jarred kind. If you want to try the jarred kind, rinse all of the slippery liquid off of the nopales. They are fully cooked, so there is no need to cook them, but you can heat them slightly if you want. I like to have mine with tomatillo sauce, which is a mixture of boiled fresh tomatillos, a jalapeno pepper and cilantro and onion. You boil the tomatillo and jalapeno together and then let it cool. Spoon the tomatillos out into a blender, add the jalapeno and some of the water that you boiled it in. Also add a little salt, some cilantro and a chunk of yellow onion. Blend until smooth. Add to your nopales for a tasty treat. You can also make green enchiladas with this sauce!
If you can find fresh nopales, (try looking at flea markets or places like farmer's markets), then most of the time, you can buy them with the spines removed, and you can even buy them cut, or you can buy the whole paddles and cut them into strips yourself.
Any questions, send me an e-mail. I love nopales and could eat them all day long!
