The tree still produces pears ,but we dont eat them and they draw hornets in the early fall. It provides very little shade , but it does add a little something to the yard and Id like to keep it if I can. Short of felling the tree, what can I do to get rid of the ants. They will kill the tree eventually and then move on to greener pastures namly my house which is only 20 ft away. I had to get gas this week so an exterminator is out of the question. How do i get rid of the ants and keep the tree??

Purchase a bag of Sevin at your local hardware store, lumber yard or nursery. Follow the directions on the bag.
